EADS changes name to Airbus, raises jet order goal

PARIS (Reuters) - Europe's EADS on Wednesday confirmed plans to reorganize in three divisions and change its name to Airbus, adopting the look and feel of its arch-rival Boeing in a bid to become more competitive.

EADS will be called Airbus Group, after its core planemaking subsidiary, and will combine its defense and space activities in one division together with Airbus Military transporters, currently twinned with passenger jets.

Eurocopter, the world's largest commercial helicopter maker, will be renamed Airbus Helicopters.

The announcement came as EADS completed a strategy review and raised the 2013 order target for its core Airbus unit by 25 percent to more than 1,000 aircraft, as reported by Reuters earlier this month.

Other targets were unchanged.

Powered by Airbus commercial profits, which offset lower helicopter and space earnings, second-quarter EADS operating profit rose 23 percent to 887 million euros ($1.18 billion) on revenue of 13.945 billion, up 3 percent.

Analysts were on average expecting second-quarter operating profit of 839 million euros on revenue of 13.693 billion.

Airbus is locked in a battle to regain leadership of the $100 billion annual jet market after arch-rival Boeing grabbed the top spot in both orders and deliveries last year.

At the same time, EADS hopes its decision to unite under one of Europe's most recognized brands will galvanize the rest of its businesses from helicopters to rockets.

Chief Executive Tom Enders said this would "take costs out, increase profitability and improve our market position".

EADS said the reorganization would start on January 1 and support a "Flightpath 2015 for improved shareholder returns".

Daramola is charged with reckless driving and using a cell phone while operating a vehicle. Additionally, Daramola was charged with death by auto, a second degree offense. (AP) ? A family friend says the family of an 8-month-old northern New Jersey infant killed in a bus crash is struggling to cope with the tragedy.

Julio Marenca spoke to reporters Wednesday afternoon in North Bergen, the town across the Hudson River from Manhattan where the Paredes family lives.

Little Angelie Paredes was being pushed along by her mother Maylin on Tuesday evening when a shuttle bus veered out of control and smashed into a light pole, toppling it onto her stroller.

Marenca said Angelie had recently learned how to stand up.

Forty-eight-year-old bus driver Idowu Daramola of Thornwood, N.Y., faces charges including death by auto and using a cellphone while operating a vehicle.

Seven other people were hurt.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

A bus driver who hit a light pole that toppled onto a stroller, killing an infant and injuring seven other people in a chain-reaction crash, faced criminal charges including using a cellphone while operating a vehicle, authorities said Wednesday.

Idowu Daramola, 48, was scheduled to make an initial court appearance but the hearing was moved back to Thursday morning. The Thornwood, N.Y. man is also charged with death by auto and reckless driving in Tuesday afternoon's crash, according to the Hudson County Sheriff's Office.

Daramola also had two outstanding warrants for picking up or discharging passengers in an unauthorized area, according to sheriff's office spokesman Mike Makarski.

The accident happened in West New York on a road that overlooks the Hudson River and offers a panoramic view of Manhattan. Authorities said the bus struck a lamppost, which fell onto a stroller. The bus then hit a tree, another lamppost and caromed into a parked car, which struck three other parked vehicles. Eight-month-old Angelie Paredes was killed, and seven other people were sent to hospitals. Paredes' family was scheduled to hold a news conference Wednesday afternoon.

"I heard a loud crash and people screaming," said Iris Pizarro, who lives in an apartment building across the street. "That's when I ran to the window and saw the mother over the baby screaming, "My daughter! My baby!"

On Wednesday morning, a makeshift memorial of lit candles, teddy bears and flowers had been set up as utility crews worked to reinstall the light pole. The bus stop sits between a park and playground atop a swath of trees and shrubs running down a steep slope.

The vehicle was operated by Sphinx Transportation, which provides shuttle service between New Jersey and New York City. A woman waiting at the bus stop Wednesday said she frequently takes the shuttle bus if it arrives while she is waiting for a New Jersey Transit commuter bus. But she said she wasn't surprised that one of the buses was involved in an accident.

"I'm not shocked at all that it was one of these drivers," Yorvira Kavanaugh said. "They're always on their phones, always arguing with each other. Sometimes they pull up next to each other and argue about passengers.

The company said Tuesday it did not know the cause of the accident.

"This was horrible," she said. "I have two babies and I'm always walking around here with them."

Attorney information for Daramola wasn't immediately available.

Dauphin County to spray for West Nile Virus in Washington Twp.

?Spraying to control mosquitoes that spread the West Nile Virus is scheduled to take place at 9 p.m. Monday in the Loyalton area of Washington Twp., Dauphin County officials announced.

The rain date for the application will be Tuesday.

Any resident who has concerns about the spraying in this area should call Dauphin County WNV Program Coordinator Eric Naguski at 717-921-8100 by 4 p.m. on July 29.

The treatments will be administered using truck-mounted equipment. The equipment dispenses Biomist 3 + 15, a permethrin insecticide product, at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre. This is a very low concentration of a pesticide that has been tested and approved by the U.S. ?Environmental Protection Agency for use in controlling adult mosquito populations in and around people, county officials said in a news release.

The county?s West Nile Virus Control Program has collected five positive samples this year. No human cases of West Nile Virus have been reported this year in Dauphin County.

The county offered answers to these frequently asked questions about mosquito control:

Q: ?Should I wash toys and other items in the yard at the time of the application?

A: It is not necessary to wash items in your yard after the application. Due to low application rates, any exposure from contact with these surfaces would be low and pose negligible risks.

Q: ?Should I cover the pool before the application?

A: No, residue in a pool would be low and also diluted by the water in the pool.

Q: Should I close the windows and turn off my air conditioner?

A: The ULV vapor disperses readily, and little movement of the material into open windows with screens is expected. However, individuals with upper respiratory problems, such as asthma, may react to ULV applications. Closing windows and turning off air conditioners is recommended for those with upper respiratory problems.

4. How long should I wait before I let my pet out?

When the chemical is applied at the labeled rates, there are wide margins of safety for humans, dogs, cats and other mammals. Indoor pets may be "let out" immediately following the application. Outdoor pets may be left outdoors.

5. How long should I wait before allowing the children to enter the yard?

The ULV vapor disperses very quickly after the application. Individuals with respiratory problems may react to ULV application. People with these health issues may want to wait an hour before resuming outdoor activities in treated areas.

6. How do I get on your no-spray list?

Please call the Dauphin County WNV Control Program at 717-921-8100 to be placed on the no-spray list.

ME: Wisconsin Boy Likely Died Soon After Going Missing - Wjon

Isaiah Theis (Facebook)

BALSAM LAKE, Wis. (AP) ? A medical examiner says a 2-year-old western Wisconsin boy who died in a locked trunk likely died soon after his family reported him missing.

The body of 2-year-old Isaiah Theis was found in the trunk of a car last week on his family?s property near Centuria. A preliminary autopsy shows the boy died from hyperthermia.

The Midwest Medical Examiner?s Office says changes in Isaiah?s body ?were consistent with him dying soon after the time he was last known to be alive.?

Public visitation for Isaiah will be held Tuesday at Trollhaugen ski resort in Dresser. A private funeral is scheduled Wednesday in St. Croix Falls.

The family?s pastor says the boy likely climbed into the car trunk himself after grabbing the keys.
