Hundreds attend South Africa rape victim's funeral

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Hundreds of mourners have gathered in South Africa for the funeral of a 17-year-old girl whose brutal rape has sparked national outrage.

The funeral took place Saturday in Bredasdorp, a Western Cape town. It is there where the girl was raped and her body was carved open from her stomach to her genitals by her attackers. She lived long enough to identify one of her killers.

Mourners carried her white coffin, adorned with flowers, to be buried. Family members openly wept during the funeral service, attended by government leaders and activists.

Three men, including her former ex-boyfriend, have been arrested over her death and are scheduled to appear in court Monday.

The attack has sparked calls from South Africa's president to stop the high incidence of rapes in the nation.

France hunting fraudsters in horsemeat scandal

PARIS (AP) ? Europe's horsemeat scandal is spreading, as French consumer safety authorities say companies from Romania, Cyprus and the Netherlands were part of a supply chain that resulted in horsemeat being disguised as beef in frozen lasagna sold around the continent.

Romania's president scrambled to salvage his country's reputation as Romanian authorities investigate the claim. Dutch authorities say they're ready to investigate if needed. A Swedish manufacturer is suing a French supplier.

No one has reported health risks from the mislabeled meat, but it has unsettled consumers across Europe.

French supermarkets announced Sunday that they've pulled a raft of pre-prepared meals, including lasagna, moussaka and cannelloni suspected of containing undeclared horsemeat.

The motivation for passing off horsemeat as beef appeared to be financial, and authorities are concentrating on pursuing anyone guilty of fraud in the affair, said France's junior minister for consumer goods, Benoit Hamon.

Hamon said in a statement Saturday that an initial investigation shows that a subsidiary of French company Poujol bought frozen meat from a Cypriot trader, who had received it from a Dutch food trader. And that Dutch company had received the meat from two Romanian butchers.

The statement didn't name the Romanian, Cypriot or Dutch companies.

Poujol then supplied a Luxembourg factory, Hamon's statement said. Another French company, Comigel, also was involved, and the lasagna was ultimately sold under the Sweden-based Findus brand.

While horsemeat is largely taboo in Britain and some other countries, in France it is sold in specialty butcher shops and prized by some connoisseurs. But French authorities are worried about producers misleading the public.

An affair that started earlier this year with worries about horsemeat in burgers in Ireland and Britain has spread into a Europe-wide scandal.

The EU commissioner for agriculture is meeting Monday with Romania's foreign minister. Romanian President Traian Basescu said Sunday that his country would lose credibility "for many years," if the Romanian butchers turn out to be the root of the problem ? and face potential export restrictions.

"I hope that this won't happen," Basescu said in televised statements.

Basescu said that so far no irregularities have been discovered. Romania's agricultural ministry has begun an investigation.

In the Netherlands, Esther Filon, spokeswoman for the Dutch Foods and Wares Authority, said Sunday that the Dutch haven't started investigating but they are ready to if necessary.

"We're a ways away from being able to confirm or deny whether a Dutch company is involved," she said. "It would presumably be a question of fraud, rather than food safety. Horse meat can be sold legally in the Netherlands, as long as it is labeled as such."

Findus Sweden plans to sue France's Comigel for breach of contract and fraud, Findus Nordic CEO Jari Latvanen said Sunday. He said the company's deal with Comigel stipulates the beef in the lasagna should come from Germany, France or Austria, but that has not been the case.

"We understand that customers are disappointed. So are we. Customers must be able to trust the contents declaration," he said. "We will take strong action to make sure those who are liable in this affair are punished. Our reputation has been damaged, and we do everything to re-establish confidence."

Type 1 Diabetes Cured In Dogs | Your Health Journal

diabetesglucoseExciting news has been published this week by Diabetes, the most important journal on the disease. Researchers from the Universitat Autonomica de Barcelona (UAB) have shown for the first time that it is possible to cure Type 1 Diabetes in large animals with gene therapy. Two diabetic dogs were treated with a single session of gene therapy, and completely recovered their health and no longer show any signs of the disease.

Gene therapy is a new way of treating disease that uses DNA as a pharmaceutical agent. An injection of modified genes are injected into the patient, and the DNA modifies or supplements the patient?s genes so as to better fight off any given disease. Gene therapy can be used to encode a functional gene that helps a cell fight off disease, correct mutations, or create a therapeutic protein drug.

The researchers at UAB led by Fatima Bosch achieved their results with only one round of injections to the dog?s rear legs. These injections introduced gene therapy vectors that accomplished two things: they expressed an insulin gene, and they activated glucokinase. Glucokinase is an enzyme that controls how much glucose is taken out of the blood stream, and when both of these new genes act together, they work as a ?glucose detector?, which helps control the glucose levels in the blood and thus reducing hypoglycemia.

diabeteswordThe dogs were treated over four years ago, and since that single round of treatments have shown consistently better health than other dogs that were given frequent insulin shots to help control their diabetes. They showed good glucose levels at all times, even after meals or during fasts, and improved their weight and developed no secondary complications.

This is the first study to be successfully run on a large mammal, though excellent results were achieved before with mice. The success that the UAB team has achieved with dogs opens the doors to developing gene therapy techniques for veterinary medicine, and eventually into treating diabetic human patients. This revolutionary achievement opens high expectations that gene therapy may prove to be the best solution to our burgeoning diabetes crisis, and the fact that only one session was needed also speaks to both the efficacy of the treatment and its permanent benefits.

Apple and Samsung?s complete dominance of mobile industry profits gets visualized

LONDON, Feb 8 (Reuters) - Formula One must bring rising costs under control to help struggling teams race on in tough economic circumstances, even if talk of impending crisis is wide of the mark, principals agree. The folding of Spanish-based HRT since the end of last season owed as much to the economic troubles of the team's debt-stricken homeland as to its lack of success on the track but it still flashed up warning signs. ...

Obama nominates Tavenner to lead Medicare and Medicaid

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Thursday renominated one of his top healthcare advisers to lead the federal agency responsible for overseeing Medicare, Medicaid and the implementation of his 2010 healthcare reform law.

If confirmed by the Senate, Marilyn Tavenner would become the first official head of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) since 2006. She currently leads the same agency as acting administrator.

As part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, CMS runs the Medicare and Medicaid healthcare programs that serve about 100 million elderly, disabled and low-income people at a cost estimated at $885 billion for this year. Both programs are at the center of a looming debate in Congress over how to reduce the federal deficit.

If confirmed as agency chief, Tavenner would also exercise official authority over the biggest expansion of healthcare coverage in more than a generation under Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare," which is expected to extend coverage to 38 million people over the next 10 years.

CMS has been a target of Republican opposition to Obama's healthcare policies since early in his presidency.

Tavenner, a nurse and former hospital executive, became acting administrator in late 2011 and was nominated to lead the agency. But the Senate never acted on her nomination.

Her predecessor, healthcare reform expert Donald Berwick, had assumed the job through a temporary appointment in July 2010 but left after less than 18 months when Senate Republicans made it clear that they would not allow his nomination.

Tavenner has won praise from some Republicans, including House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and enjoys strong support among healthcare industry groups and consumer advocates.

"Republicans are eager to discuss the impact of Obamacare's growing costs and broken promises, and the administration's neglect of Medicare's impending bankruptcy," Don Stewart, a spokesman for Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said in a statement regarding Tavenner's nomination.
