LONDON - Manchester City sent Newcastle to its first defeat of the season, a 3-1 victory at home that allowed unbeaten City to strengthen its hold on first place in the English Premier League.
Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero made penalty kicks for City, with Micah Richards adding another goal. City is eight points ahead of second-place Manchester United, which played at Swansea later in the day.
Arsenal won 2-1 at Norwich for its fifth straight victory that kept the club among the top four in the league. Robin van Persie scored twice for Arsenal, increasing his league-leading total to 13 goals in 12 games.
Wigan remain anchored in last place after being held to a 3-3 draw by next-to-last Blackburn.
