White House accuses Republicans of 'fishing expeditions'

By Tabassum Zakaria and Alina Selyukh

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House on Sunday accused Republicans of conducting political "fishing expeditions," while Republican lawmakers showed no let up in attacking President Barack Obama's administration for a culture of what they called cover-up and "intimidation."

With controversies on three fronts - the Internal Revenue Service, the administration's explanation of last year's Benghazi attack and the Justice Department's seizure of the Associated Press' phone records - White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer pushed back against suggestions that Obama was under a cloud of scandal.

"I think we've seen this playbook from Republicans before," Pfeiffer said on NBC's "Meet The Press."

"What they want to do when they are lacking a positive agenda is try to drag Washington into a swamp of partisan fishing expeditions, trumped-up hearings and false allegations. We're not going to let that happen."

Republicans are pressing for investigations and congressional hearings and have kept up a stream of criticism of the White House over the three issues, forcing the administration to repeatedly defend its actions.

For the time-being, Obama appears to be weathering the storm. A CNN/ORC International poll released on Sunday showed 53 percent of Americans approve of the way Obama is doing his job, with 45 percent saying they disapprove.

More than six in 10 respondents said the president's statements about the IRS scandal are completely or mostly true, with 35 percent disagreeing. On the handling of the attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya last September, only 42 percent of respondents were satisfied, according to the telephone survey of 923 adults conducted on Friday and Saturday.

The White House has repeatedly expressed outrage about the conduct of the IRS in focusing on conservative political groups for additional scrutiny and Obama has said he first learned about it this month. Still, that has not dampened Republican criticism.

"There is a culture of intimidation throughout the administration. The IRS is just the most recent example," Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said on "Meet The Press."

Republican lawmakers said they still do not know who was responsible for the tax authority's targeting of conservative groups and want further investigation. The Senate Finance Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold hearings on it this week.

Senator Rob Portman, a Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, said on ABC's "This Week" that a special counsel may be needed to investigate "because it has to be independent of the White House."

Acting IRS Commissioner Steven Miller was fired last week and Obama has pledged new checks and safeguards to prevent anything similar from happening again.

"Given the trend line we're seeing here in so many different instances, it's an unfortunate culture I think in the administration that it's OK to cover these things up," Senator John Cornyn, a Republican, said on the CBS program "Face the Nation."

Pfeiffer acknowledged it was important to try to repair the damage caused by the IRS scandal.

"This was a breach of the public trust. And we have to work together to rebuild that trust. That's going to require Republicans to do this in a legitimate, serious governmental way and not play politics with it," he said on NBC.

Republicans are also aiming criticism at Sarah Hall Ingram, the official who previously ran the IRS' tax-exempt division during the time that an audit by the Treasury's inspector general said the targeting of conservative groups began. Since December 2010, Ingram has headed the IRS division handling the implementation of the Obama administration's healthcare reform.

The White House said it was important to wait until the facts were determined.

"This individual was not named in the inspector general's report. No one has suggested she's done anything wrong yet," Pfeiffer said on "Fox News Sunday."

"Before everyone in this town convicts this person in a court of public opinion with no evidence, let's actually get the facts and make decisions after that."

Bob Woodward, who investigated the Watergate scandal as a reporter at the Washington Post during Richard Nixon's presidency, said likening that to the current furors was not accurate.

"People are making comparisons to Watergate. This is not Watergate. But there are some people in the administration who have acted as if they want to be Nixonian," he said on NBC.

Chinese premier heads to India to boost ties

NEW DELHI (AP) ? Just weeks after a tense border standoff, China's new premier headed to India on Sunday for his first foreign trip as the neighboring giants look to speed up efforts to settle a decades-old boundary dispute and boost economic ties.

China says Premier Li Keqiang's choice of India for his first trip abroad since taking office in March shows the importance Beijing attaches to improving relations with New Delhi.

"We think very highly of this gesture because it is our view that high-level political exchanges between our two countries are an important aspect and vehicle for our expanded cooperation," said India's external affairs ministry spokesman, Syed Akbaruddin.

Jasjit Singh, a defense analyst and director of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in New Delhi, said last month's border standoff was unlikely to overshadow Li's three-day visit, the first stop of a foreign tour in which he will also visit Pakistan, Switzerland and Germany.

Singh said Indian and Chinese leaders are likely to review border talks that have failed to produce a breakthrough despite 15 rounds of discussions over the past 10 years. The two sides also will probably discuss working together in Afghanistan after next year's U.S. pullout and cooperation with Southeast Asian countries, he said.

But tensions run high between the two nations. China already sees itself as Asia's great power, while India hopes its increasing economic and military might ? though still far below its neighbor's ? will eventually put it in the same league.

While China has worked to shore up relationships with Nepal and Sri Lanka in India's traditional South Asian sphere of influence, India has been venturing into partnerships with Southeast Asian nations.

Other irritants remain in the bilateral relationship. China is a longtime ally and weapons supplier to Pakistan, India's bitter rival. Also, the presence in India of Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and the self-declared Tibetan government-in-exile is a source of tension. China accuses the Dalai Lama of wanting to split Tibet off from the rest of China, but he says he seeks more autonomy for Tibetans, not independence.

Unresolved border issues between the two nations have flared as well.

In last month's incident, India said Chinese troops crossed the countries' de facto border on April 15 and pitched camp in the Depsang valley in the Ladakh region of eastern Kashmir. New Delhi responded with diplomatic protests and then moved its soldiers just 300 meters (yards) from the Chinese position.

The two sides negotiated a peaceful end to the standoff by withdrawing troops to their original positions in the Ladakh area.

Gautam Bambawale, a senior Indian external affairs ministry official, said India and China are negotiating a Border Defense Cooperation Agreement, but declined to give details. Indian media reports said the agreement proposes a freezing of troop levels in the disputed border region as the two countries make efforts to settle the issue.

Bambawale also said Indian and Chinese officials recently held talks in Beijing on the future of Afghanistan. China, India and Russia have discussed the matter trilaterally with the idea of giving full support to Afghanistan's government as it makes the transition following the withdrawal of U.S. forces in 2014.

Shortly after his arrival in the Indian capital of New Delhi late Sunday afternoon, Li is to meet with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who will host a dinner for him. Delegation-level talks between the two sides are scheduled for Monday. Li is to attend a business summit in Mumbai, India's financial capital, among other activities.

The border spat last month prompted the Indian opposition and media to pressure the government to take on China and call off Li's visit. The government, however, chose to go ahead with the trip, highlighting its policy of trying to widen areas of cooperation with China while attempting to resolve key differences.

China has become India's biggest trading partner, with two-way trade jumping from $5 billion in 2002 to nearly $75 billion in 2011, although that figure declined to $61.5 billion last year because of the global economic downturn. Trade remains heavily skewed in China's favor, another source of concern for India.

India and China have had chilly relations since they fought a brief but bloody border war in 1962.

India says China is occupying 38,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) of its territory in the Aksai Chin plateau in the western Himalayas, while China claims around 90,000 square kilometers (35,000 square miles) in India's northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Dorjee Tseten, director of the Students for a Free Tibet, said Sunday that New Delhi police had declined permission for Tibetans to hold a demonstration against Li's visit.

"Tibetan activists are currently on the run evading imminent police arrest," he said in a statement, complaining of a heavy police presence in a New Delhi area where a large number of Tibetans-in-exile live.

Police, however, allowed about two dozen members of Shiv Sena, a Hindu right-wing political party, to demonstrate near India's Parliament, where they burned an effigy of the Chinese premier.

"Go back, go back," chanted the protesters, who also carried placards urging the Indian government to respond toughly to China's alleged border incursion. The powerful regional party held power in Mumbai from 1995 to 2000.

Ex-Pa. officer once hailed as hero faces charges

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? A former Philadelphia police officer once hailed as a hero and given a seat next to the first lady at a speech by President Obama has been arrested and charged with rape and other crimes.

Authorities allege that former officer Richard DeCoatsworth left a party with two females early Thursday and took them to another location, where they allege that he produced a handgun and "forced the two females to engage in the use of narcotics and sexual acts."

A police spokeswoman said the two called police after he left, and 27-year-old DeCoatsworth was charged with rape, sexual assault, terroristic threats and related offenses.

DeCoatsworth was hailed as a hero after he was shot in the face during a traffic stop in September 2007 but still managed to chase after his attacker, who was later sentenced to 36 to 72 years in prison.

DeCoatsworth was invited by Vice President Joe Biden to attend the president's televised February 2009 address to Congress and sat with first lady Michelle Obama. He said he didn't know why he had been singled out, but being in the presence of the nation's leaders was an honor "that I will keep with me for the rest of my life."

WCAU-TV, which first reported his arrest, said DeCoatsworth retired from the department on disability in December 2011.

Police said no other information on the alleged attack would be released Saturday to protect the victims and the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Authorities declined to say give even general locations for the party and alleged crime scene and also wouldn't say when DeCoatsworth was arrested.

A listed number for DeCoatsworth has been disconnected and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey told a Philadelphia Daily News columnist in February of last year that he believed he had made a mistake in granting the former officer's request to go back to work too soon after he was shot.

"God bless him for still wanting to get out there and do police work, but did I act in his best interest? In hindsight, I would say probably not," Ramsey told columnist Sty Bykofsky.

PFT: Te'o shows up at Maxim party

TebowAP

At a time when the Jaguars aren?t interested in bringing Tim Tebow home to Jacksonville, he went there anyway.

Via the Florida Times-Union, Tebow was in town Friday night to speak at New Life Christian Fellowship.? As he did earlier this month in Michigan, he said nothing about his NFL future.

Tebow did offer one funny, self-deprecating jab at his NFL past.

?One of my favorite stories, ironically, was against the New York Jets,? Tebow said, referring to the game-winning touchdown run for the Broncos, in a 2011 Thursday night game.? ?And probably my greatest Jets highlight, I guess.?

The Jaguars remain uninterested in allowing Tebow to create similar highlights for them, even though in 2012 the Jags tried to trade for Tebow.? Jaguars legend Tony Boselli recently suggested that Tebow possibly could be a ?franchise quarterback,? but Boselli agreed with the Jaguars? decision to steer clear of Tebowmania.

?What team wants to bring a guy who?s a developing player onto their roster when he?s going to be a complete distraction ? through no fault of his own ? and become a disruption in the locker room?? Boselli said.? ?It becomes all about that ? whether he is going to play, whether it?s going to work ? and the rest of the team is saying, ?We?re trying to win ballgames.?? I feel bad for Tim because I don?t think it?s all his fault.? It?s outside circumstances and people who are making it tough on him.?

Still, Tebow?s image feels partially scripted and contrived.? Though he seems to be a good person, there?s a too-good-to-be-completely-true element that Tebow and/or those close to him possibly have helped perpetuate.? Many casual fans have bought it completely, prompting them to skew their view of his football abilities.

Unless a team is willing to embrace Tebow and Tebowmania, making him the starting quarterback no matter how bad he is in practice or the first 3.75 quarters of a close game, it won?t work.? With no team willing to do that for 2013, the question becomes whether a team that stinks this season will decide that, for 2014, it can stink again without Tebow ? or it can stink with him.

Tribe beats Mariners in 9th for 2nd straight day

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:05 p.m. ET May 18, 2013

CLEVELAND (AP) - Two ninth-inning losses in two days have left the Seattle Mariners reeling and frustrated.

Mark Reynolds' bases-loaded fielder's choice in the ninth inning Saturday scored Jason Kipnis and gave the Cleveland Indians a 5-4 victory over Seattle.

The Mariners had tied the score in the top of the ninth on two-out home runs by Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak off Indians closer Chris Perez, but lost in heartbreaking fashion for the second time in less than 24 hours.

On Friday night, Kipnis hit a game-ending three-run homer in the 10th inning to give Cleveland a 6-3 win.

"You don't see that very often, to hit two solo homers off a top closer like Perez, then they come back and snatch it in the bottom of the inning," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said, shaking his head. "This was a tough one."

Mariners reliever Oliver Perez (1-1) started the ninth, but allowed all three Indians he faced to reach base. The veteran left-hander surrendered a single to Kipnis and a double to Asdrubal Cabrera after going up 0-2 to both hitters, then intentionally walked Nick Swisher to load the bases.

Rookie Yoervis Medina entered and Reynolds hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Brendan Ryan, but catcher Jesus Montero came off home plate after taking the throw. Kipnis scored standing up, making Chris Perez (2-0) the winner after blowing the save minutes earlier.

"I thought I had him," said Ryan, whose right knee was bloodied while making the stop. "I haven't seen the replay, so I don't know exactly what happened, but I did the best I could."

Wedge had plenty to say, especially about Montero's inability to record the force out.

"The throw beat him, but Monty came off the plate early," said Wedge, a former major league catcher. "You have to stand on the plate, but he came out a little bit early. We got the ground ball we wanted - Ryno made a great play - but we didn't get it done."

Montero said Ryan's throw pulled him slightly toward first base, which was enough to slide his left foot onto the dirt.

"Brandon made an unbelievable diving catch and I tried hard to stay on the plate," said Montero. "We usually block the plate, but the ball was a little too far and I couldn't do it."

The Mariners trailed 4-0 when starter Joe Saunders was pulled after 5 1-3 innings and a season-high 120 pitches. The lefty was rocked for 11 hits, including a home run by Reynolds in the fifth, and remained winless on the road in 2013.

Saunders is 0-4 with an 11.25 ERA in away games, but a sparkling 3-0 with an 0.94 ERA at Safeco Field.

"I'm gonna sacrifice a chicken before my next road start. ... This is just kind of a fluky thing," Saunders said. "I told (pitching coach Carl Willis) in the fifth that I'd go 150 pitches if I had to. I gave everything I had and battled my butt off today."

Seattle reliever Danny Farquhar, who was recalled from Triple-A Tacoma on Friday, made his first big league appearance since 2011 with Toronto. He tossed 2 2-3 perfect innings and struck out five after replacing Saunders.

Indians right-hander Zach McAllister took a shutout into the eighth, but was chased with one out when he allowed a two-run homer to Ryan. It was Ryan's first home run since Sept. 23, 2012, and landed on the home run porch in left.

Ibanez's blast was his second in two games against Cleveland, while Smoak's homer was his first since May 4.

"That was a very uneventful walkoff, but a win is a win," Reynolds said. "I just tried to put the ball in play somewhere. When I hit it I said to myself, `please get through,' then it was `please make a bad throw,' and Then `please get there.' "

The Mariners arrived in Cleveland having won 11 of their last 16, only to run into a buzzsaw in the Indians, who entered the day in a first-place tie with Detroit in the AL Central Division.

Seattle ace Felix Hernandez will start the third game of the four-game series Sunday against Cleveland's Justin Masterson. Hernandez leads the AL with a 1.53 ERA and has a 5-2 record.

Mariners right fielder Michael Morse (eye irritation) returned to the lineup after a one-game absence and was 0 for 4. He was hurt Friday while putting in a contact lens.

NOTES: Wedge said OF Franklin Gutierrez (right hamstring strain) will not be activated from the 15-day disabled list until "he can come up here, steal a base, and do some things." Gutierrez is playing CF and RF during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma. "If Guti is 100 percent, there is nobody better than him in center," Wedge said. "But Michael Saunders has been great there for us, and we need Guti to stay healthy. That's easier to do, playing either right or left field." ... Mariners RHP Aaron Harang (lower back stiffness) played catch before the game and will throw a bullpen session Sunday. Harang was a late scratch Thursday against the Yankees, but is scheduled to make his next start Tuesday against the Angels. ... Cleveland Browns coach Rob Chudzinski threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Nanotechnology could help fight diabetes

Friday, May 17, 2013

Injectable nanoparticles developed at MIT may someday eliminate the need for patients with Type 1 diabetes to constantly monitor their blood-sugar levels and inject themselves with insulin.

The nanoparticles were designed to sense glucose levels in the body and respond by secreting the appropriate amount of insulin, thereby replacing the function of pancreatic islet cells, which are destroyed in patients with Type 1 diabetes. Ultimately, this type of system could ensure that blood-sugar levels remain balanced and improve patients' quality of life, according to the researchers.

"Insulin really works, but the problem is people don't always get the right amount of it. With this system of extended release, the amount of drug secreted is proportional to the needs of the body," says Daniel Anderson, an associate professor of chemical engineering and member of MIT's Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and Institute for Medical Engineering and Science.

Anderson is the senior author of a paper describing the new system in a recent issue of the journal ACS Nano. Lead author of the paper is Zhen Gu, a former postdoc in Anderson's lab. The research team also includes Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT, and researchers from the Department of Anesthesiology at Boston Children's Hospital.

Mimicking the pancreas

Currently, people with Type 1 diabetes typically prick their fingers several times a day to draw blood for testing their blood-sugar levels. When levels are high, these patients inject themselves with insulin, which breaks down the excess sugar.

In recent years, many researchers have sought to develop insulin-delivery systems that could act as an "artificial pancreas," automatically detecting glucose levels and secreting insulin. One approach uses hydrogels to measure and react to glucose levels, but those gels are slow to respond or lack mechanical strength, allowing insulin to leak out.

The MIT team set out to create a sturdy, biocompatible system that would respond more quickly to changes in glucose levels and would be easy to administer.

Their system consists of an injectable gel-like structure with a texture similar to toothpaste, says Gu, who is now an assistant professor of biomedical engineering and molecular pharmaceutics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University. The gel contains a mixture of oppositely charged nanoparticles that attract each other, keeping the gel intact and preventing the particles from drifting away once inside the body.

Using a modified polysaccharide known as dextran, the researchers designed the gel to be sensitive to acidity. Each nanoparticle contains spheres of dextran loaded with an enzyme that converts glucose into gluconic acid. Glucose can diffuse freely through the gel, so when sugar levels are high, the enzyme produces large quantities of gluconic acid, making the local environment slightly more acidic.

That acidic environment causes the dextran spheres to disintegrate, releasing insulin. Insulin then performs its normal function, converting the glucose in the bloodstream into glycogen, which is absorbed into the liver for storage.

Long-term control

In tests with mice that have Type 1 diabetes, the researchers found that a single injection of the gel maintained normal blood-sugar levels for an average of 10 days. Because the particles are mostly composed of polysaccharides, they are biocompatible and eventually degrade in the body.

The researchers are now trying to modify the particles so they can respond to changes in glucose levels faster, at the speed of pancreas islet cells. "Islet cells are very smart. They can release insulin very quickly once they sense high sugar levels," Gu says.

Before testing the particles in humans, the researchers plan to further develop the system's delivery properties and to work on optimizing the dosage that would be needed for use in humans.

(AP) ? One of two wildfires burning in the hills and mountains around Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles was fully contained Saturday and authorities were getting an upper hand on the second one.

The 712-acre fire was contained late Saturday after breaking out Friday and briefly threatening an elementary school and about 20 homes, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

When a wildfire is contained, it means firefighters have corralled it to keep it from advancing, but flames can continue to burn inside the fire line. Some 350 firefighters battled the blaze Saturday amid unpredictable winds and rough terrain.

The earlier fire that broke out Wednesday near Frazier Park was 80 percent contained Saturday after consuming some 4,358 acres.

That blaze was not threatening any homes or buildings but fire officials said containing it would be a long, difficult task because it was burning in such rugged and hard-to-reach terrain.

The cause was still under investigation.

Exclusive: Onex fails to find buyer for Carestream Health

By Soyoung Kim and Greg Roumeliotis

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Onex Corp has called off its auction of medical imaging firm Carestream Health Inc after failing to find a buyer that was willing to meet its price expectation of as much as $3.5 billion, three people familiar with the matter said this week.

Bain Capital LLC, the last remaining private equity firm that was talking to Onex about a possible deal, dropped out of the auction this week, the people said. Another interested party, Thomas H. Lee Partners LP, exited the process earlier, they added.

Onex is now considering other options for Carestream, with a dividend recapitalization the most likely outcome, one of the people said. Under that scenario, Carestream would borrow money to pay Onex, a Canadian private equity firm, a special dividend.

All the people asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential. Representatives of Carestream and Onex did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Bain and Thomas H. Lee Partners declined to comment.

With interest rates at record lows, financing markets have never been more favorable for private equity deals. Still, a stock market rally has boosted the price expectations of sellers, even of private companies, and has made buyers wary of overpaying.

There have been 180 so-called secondary buyouts - involving the sale of a company from one private equity firm to another - announced since the start of the year, with a total volume of $16.3 billion, compared with 191 secondary buyouts worth $11.1 billion in the same period a year ago, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Rochester, New York-based Carestream was formed in 2007 when Onex bought Eastman Kodak Co's health group and renamed the business Carestream. The company provides digital X-ray systems, molecular imaging systems and dental imaging products, software and services.

Onex bought the company for $2.35 billion, equivalent to less than five times its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA), and was hoping to receive seven to eight times its EBITDA, the people said.

Carestream had annual EBITDA of $429 million and net debt of $1.5 billion as of December 31, according to a financial earnings statement from Onex. Onex and its funds collectively own 93 percent of Carestream.

Much of the investment case for Carestream hinged on it successfully making a transition from X-ray films - which currently account for about half of the company's profits - to digital technology, people familiar with the matter told Reuters previously.

The challenges of making this transition, particularly in international markets, led other private equity firms to take a dim view of Carestream's valuation, the people said. The lack of growth reduced Carestream's appeal to other medical technology companies involved in the sector, they added.

Large private equity deals in U.S. healthcare have been few and far between of late. Last month, a consortium of private equity firms comprising Blackstone Group LP , KKR & Co LP , Carlyle Group LP and Temasek Holdings made an unsuccessful attempt to acquire Life Technologies Corp , a maker of genetic instruments that instead agreed to sell itself to Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc for $13.6 billion.

Carestream, which was working with Goldman Sachs Group Inc , Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse Group AG on the sale, had also attracted interest from Carlyle and KKR earlier in the process, people familiar with the matter have said.

U.S. authorities seize accounts of major Bitcoin operator

By Brett Wolf

ST. LOUIS, May 17 (Thomson Reuters Accelus) - U.S. authorities have seized two accounts linked to a major operator in the booming Bitcoin digital currency market, Tokyo-based exchange Mt. Gox. The move may prevent the firm from facilitating the purchase and sale of Bitcoins in U.S. dollars at a time when use of the currency and its value has mushroomed.

Bitcoin, which unlike conventional money is bought and sold on a peer-to-peer network independent of any central authority, has grown popular among users who lack faith in the established banking system.

The price of the volatile currency ballooned in March as a result of the Cyprus bank crisis. Authorities worry that a lack of regulation has left the currency vulnerable to money launderers and other criminals.

A seizure warrant obtained Tuesday by the Department of Homeland Security froze an account that an Iowa-based online payment processor, Dwolla Inc, held at Veridian Credit Union in the name of Mutum Sigillum LLC.

An affidavit filed by an agent with the department's investigations unit states that Mutum Sigillum, a Mt. Gox subsidiary incorporated in Delaware, was operating as an unlicensed money transmitter, in violation of federal law.

Treasury's anti-money laundering unit, the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), in March issued guidance that dubbed digital currency exchanges money transmitters, a finding that obliged such businesses to register with FinCEN and obtain any mandated state licenses.

A search of FinCEN's online registration database Friday morning suggested that neither Mt. Gox nor Mutum Sigillum had registered. The affidavit cited Mutum Sigillum's failure to register with FinCEN as sufficient grounds to seize its accounts.

Both Mutum Sigillum and Mt. Gox, which says it handles 80 percent of Bitcoin trading, are owned by Mark Karpeles, the affidavit states. It adds that Karpeles opened an account in Mutum Sigillum's name at Wells Fargo in May 2011, and that when doing so completed a form in which he said it was not a money transmitter.

Karpeles did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nor did Dwolla.

The Wells Fargo account was seized earlier this month as part of the same investigation that prompted the seizure of Mutum Sigillum's Dwolla account at Veridian Credit Union, the affidavit states.

It also notes that those wishing to use U.S. dollars to buy Bitcoins deposited money with Dwolla and directed that it be forwarded to Mt. Gox. When people wanted to cash out, Mt. Gox wired funds from an account at Sumitomo Mitsui Bank in Japan to the Wells Fargo account and U.S. dollars were sent to Dwolla.

An Homeland Security department informant based in Maryland engaged in such transactions, the affidavit states, presenting the informant's Bitcoin exchanges as evidence of Mutum Sigillum's purported status as a money transfer firm.

The seizure of the Mt. Gox-linked accounts may threaten the exchange's ability to do business in U.S. dollars. The impact on the overall Bitcoin market is unclear.

Some Mt. Gox customers have already taken to message boards to express concern about their ability to buy Bitcoins with U.S. dollars or liquidate existing investments. One user posting on a Bitcoin question and answer site suggested this problem was a grave one for the currency and Mt. Gox.

"Most of the trading volume is in dollars at Gox if I'm not mistaken, so this might be the death blow for them," the user's post stated.

Thomson Reuters' Compliance Complete reported last month that Karpeles said all of Mt. Gox's U.S.-dollar activity was accomplished via a Dwolla account.

When Compliance Complete asked at the time whether Mt. Gox had registered with FinCEN in the wake of the March guidance, Karpeles said that it had not, but that it planned to do so. He added that Mt. Gox and Dwolla were "discussing compliance issues on a regular basis."

A spokeswoman for Homeland Security declined to comment on whether the agency, or any foreign law enforcement agency with which it may be cooperating, plan to seize any other accounts linked to Karpeles, Mt. Gox, or other Bitcoin exchanges.

Eminem wasn't stabbed -- claim was hoax

Celebs

IMAGE: Eminem

AP file

Eminem is just fine, his representatives say.

The text of the Facebook message was grim: "Rapper Eminem left nearly DEAD after being stabbed 4 times in NYC!" But the claim was untrue, and the attached photo of a tattooed man's back with deep slash marks was not a picture of the rapper.

"These happen all the time. He's fine," a representative of the rapper told SPIN.

But the creepy claim gained some traction among music fans anyway, as many who saw it on Facebook and Twitter shared it without verifying the facts.

Those who click on the link, supposedly to see a video of the attack (!), are forced to share the link with their Facebook friends. "After sharing the post, the link redirects to a survey website promising ?free prizes? along with more Eminem stabbing news, which, of course, never comes," the International Business Times reports.

As the International Business Times notes, the same photo of a man's slashed back was used in a similar scam in 2011 to claim that Justin Bieber was stabbed -- he was not.

A new Eminem album is due out soon, and rumors are that it may include an appearance by comic Chris Rock.

Google confirms Nexus Q not supported in latest version of Play Music

Google Play music is about to reveal its saddest song... for owners of the Nexus Q that is. In fact some might say it's the funeral march. It's been confirmed to Phandroid that the latest update of Google's Play Music service -- that we saw outed yesterday -- doesn't support the firm's own music streamer. A statement given to the website confirms the fact, with little to suggest it'll get any better for the little black ball going forward. Final nail in the coffin? Who knows, but given that it was erased from view on the Play store some time ago, and orders never charged, you might want to dust off that black hat after all.

NBC bringing back '70s cop drama 'Ironside'

NEW YORK (AP) ? NBC is announcing a new comedy for fall from "Scrubs" creator Bill Lawrence and an updating of the '70s cop drama "Ironside."

The revived "Ironside" will star Blair Underwood as the paralyzed lawman who uses a wheelchair. That role was originally played by Raymond Burr.

Another new drama, "Chicago PD," from producer Dick Wolf, will be a companion piece to "Chicago Fire," which premiered this season.

The Lawrence-produced comedy, "Undateable," stars Chris D'Elia (from the just-canceled NBC sitcom "Whitney") as a ladies' man who wants to help his friends who are not so successful with romance.

NBC also announced Friday it has axed "Go On," a freshman comedy starring Matthew Perry, and its newsmagazine "Rock Center with Brian Williams."

The network's entire fall schedule will be unveiled Sunday.

Wearable computers: Marty McFly, meet your jacket

Clothing will not just be embedded with devices, but actually will be devices, from belly band fetal monitors to shirts that charge your cell phone to dresses that release insecticide on command.

By Denise Chow,?LiveScience Staff Writer / May 7, 2013

Garments created in the Textiles Nanotechnology Laboratory at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. The brown and blue dress on the left was produced without any pigments or dyes. Researchers are merging nanoscience and fashion design to color garments without using any dyes, and to add antibacterial properties to clothing.

Imagine if your shirt could track your heart rate as you run, or if it could charge your cellphone on the go. Innovative fashion designers and engineers, who are pushing the envelope with "smart textiles," dream of designing garments that are not just embedded with devices, but actually are the devices. Welcome to the world of wearable computing.

The development of smart textiles is a true fusion of fashion and technology. From manipulating nanoparticles in cotton, to incorporating knit antennas and transistors into garments, the computational fashion industry is reimagining how we use clothing in our everyday lives.

"Can garments become the actual device?" said Genevieve Dion, assistant professor and director of the Shima Seiki Haute Technology Laboratory at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "My dream is to have nothing hard on [clothing], and no batteries that need to be put into the garment, no small pods that need to go into the pocket. Is it possible? Maybe."

Dion was one of four speakers at an event on computational fashion held May 1 here at the Eyebeam Art+Technology Center in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.

Dion and her colleagues are developing a "belly band" to monitor fetal growth for women facing high-risk pregnancies. The band, knit with conductive yarn and outfitted with a fabric antenna, can transmit radio signals to a pregnant woman's physician, providing around-the-clock, real-time data on the health of the mother and unborn baby.

The band is much more comfortable than current fetal-monitoring devices and can be worn throughout a woman's pregnancy, Dion added.

At the Shima Seiki Haute Technology Lab, engineers and designers are also investigating new ways to digitally fabricate knit garments. The researchers use special software to design pieces of clothing, which are then manufactured by state-of-the-art computerized knitting machines. The process, Dion said, is essentially the fashion industry's take on 3D printing.

Already, the digital models and the resulting prototypes are "remarkably close," she said.

At Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., scientists and fashion designers are working at the intersection of textiles and nanoscience, essentially creating new materials or reworking existing ones.

10 things I learned from my mom - by Melinda Green - Happy ...

Melinda is the 19-year old daughter of Carey and Mindi Green.

by Melinda Green

#1 The Truth of My Identity in Christ

Ever since I was little, my mom has been teaching me about who I am because of Jesus and His work in me. I am a new creation. No matter how I fall short and mess up, I know that I am pure and holy because of Christ. Because of this knowledge, I can live life confident in God, and who He is making me to be. When insecurities and doubts rise up to make life difficult, I can fight them and live according to the truth because I know the truth about who I am. I am in Christ, and He is in me.

#2 Not to be Controlled by My Emotions

Emotions are powerful things, and it?s easy to live life and make decisions based on how we feel. Without even knowing it, we let our feelings dictate our thoughts and actions. As long as I can remember, my mom has shown me the difference between living according to emotion and living according to reality and God?s truth. Because of this, I have learned over time how to push aside my emotions when they don?t line up with reality and strive to obey God, not only when I feel like it, but especially when I don?t.

#3 The Importance of Communication

Throughout my life, I have seen the relationships in my family thrive. I realize that this would not be the case, if God had not given my mom the wisdom to initiate good communication in our home. The example she has set: talking about everything, always asking us kids how we feel about things, always telling us if there is something bothering her, or some way that we hurt her, asking us if there is something bothering us? this has enabled us to ?keep the slate clean? between one another, and learn to love each other on a deeper level. This habit of communicating has also enabled us to become unified as a family. Now that I am an adult, I see that there is no way to have a good relationship without open communication about EVERYTHING. I pray that I will one day be able to continue this legacy of good communication in my home and family.

#4 The Importance of Living an Organized Life

God has enable my mom to live an orderly life, and run an orderly home in reflection of who He is ? an orderly God. She has taught me how to live my life in the same way: keeping things simple and organized. This has enabled me to keep my life relatively stress free and peaceful. I also believe that learning to live an organized life has enabled me honor God by being a good steward of the life He?s given me.

#5 To Strive for God?s Best in All of Life

My mom wants her life to be ?more than fine.? She wants to live in obedience to God in every area of life, and she can?t stand it when something in her life doesn?t measure up to God?s best. Seeing her example in this area has really helped me fight my complacency in many areas of life, and desire God?s best, in order to be pleasing to Him.

#6 The Importance of Wisdom

My mom has taught me the value of wisdom in every area of life. She has shown me the importance of asking God what He thinks about things, and living accordingly. She has encouraged me to read the Proverbs and ask God for His wisdom daily. I see God?s wisdom in her life everyday, and desire to become more like her; the wisest person I know.

#7 The Value of a Personal Relationship with God

Ever since I was little, my mom has encouraged me to spend time with God, reading my Bible and praying. She has stressed that the most important thing in my life is my relationship with Him. As I?ve grown, I?ve seen how this diligence to seek God has deepened my relationship with Him and has grown me to become more like Him. I am so thankful for the example that my mom has been of seeking God diligently and putting her relationship of Him first in all of life.

#8 The Value of Being a Home-Maker

My mom is a stay-at-home-mom, a wife and mother, a home-maker. My whole life, she has made a cozy, peaceful home for us to live in. She has taken the time to teach her kids about God and life, and has never been too busy with work or other pursuits. I have come to realize that her dedication to her home and family has been the main thing that has enabled our family to thrive. Through her example I see that her job as wife and mother is crucial to the health of our family. Thanks to her, I am excited to one day follow in her steps and be a home-maker in my own home.

#9 The Value of Being a ?Helper?

When I say ?Helper?, I am referring to the wife?s role as ?Helper? to her husband. My mom has taught me that the wife?s job in marriage is to be the ?crown of her husband? ? to help her husband grow and become all that God desires for him to be. God has graciously enabled my mom to be a wonderful helper to my dad, and I am excited to one day be the same for my future husband.

#10 The Importance of Fearing God

Last, but definitely not least, I would say that my mom has taught me to fear God, and surrender my will to Him in all things. I have seen my mom surrender her will to God?s will time and time again. She has suffered through much pain and hard times, but she has always chosen to cling to God and obey Him. Her fear of God, and her desire to glorify Him even when it causes her pain, has enabled her to have a deeper, more meaningful relationship with God than many Christians experience. Her life has shown me the benefits of fearing God above all else, and I desire for my life to be characterized by the same humble attitude of fear and surrender.

Pennsylvania student charged in nude pope-parody

PITTSBURGH (AP) ? A Carnegie Mellon University student was charged Friday with indecent exposure by campus police after a Catholic bishop complained about her parading nude from the waist down while dressed as the pope.

A male student who was nude also was charged, but it wasn't immediately clear what he was doing during the Pittsburgh school's spring fine arts parade last month.

CMU President Jared Cohon said Friday that the misdemeanor charges were filed in Allegheny County against the two students and the school would not take any additional disciplinary action. He said the school endorses artistic expression but public nudity is illegal.

"There are competing values at issue here: Carnegie Mellon aims to be a place where ideas can be expressed and debated openly, but also where people of all backgrounds, faiths, and beliefs feel welcomed and supported," Cohon said.

Bishop David Zubik of the Pittsburgh Catholic Diocese complained after the April 18 parade, in which the female student ? with her pubic hair shaved in the shape of a cross ? threw condoms to onlookers. Cohon apologized last week for the display.

The university did not identify the two students. Court records show students Katherine B. O'Connor, 19, of Pittsburgh, and Robb S. Godshaw, 22, of Wilmette, Ill., were charged by campus police with indecent exposure. No attorney was listed for either.

Neither O'Connor nor Godshaw responded to requests for comment from The Associated Press. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Godshaw emailed the newspaper: "On the advice of counsel, neither myself nor fellow nude artist are giving comments at this time."

A preliminary hearing was scheduled for June 10.

Zubik said in a statement Friday that CMU treated "this unfortunate incident" seriously.

"Dialogue, disagreements and even demonstrations must be conducted in an atmosphere of decency," Zubik said. "I hope that all of us ? including the students involved ? can learn and grow from this very important lesson."

Prepping on a Budget - Affordable Items for Preppers - Emergency Lighting

Being caught in the dark when the power goes out can be a very unsettling feeling. This is when you need some form of emergency lighting. A flashlight can go a long way towards solving this problem but sometimes you need a little extra versatility in your preps. You may need the use of your hands and this can be complicated if you are trying to hold onto a flashlight. One item that can serve a number of purposes for use as emergency lighting is a portable solar-powered LED light. There are a number of versions of these solar-powered lights available. If you want it to help with security, you can get one with a motion detector. They also come in various sizes depending upon your lighting needs and may have as few as 5 LED lights or up to sixty.? Most of the solar lights available with 5 or 10 LED lights are available in a very affordable price range ($20 to $25).
The light comes with magnets for attaching it to a metal surface as well as regular screw mounts for attaching it to a wall or ceiling. While designed primarily for tool sheds and other small buildings (chicken coop?). The magnets make it easy to attach to surfaces in a number of ways that increases the usability of the light. When attached to the front of the refrigerator with the built-in magnets, it provides more than enough light to move around safely and perform simple chores. If attached to a metal surface on your vehicle it can provide sufficient light to change a tire or do minor repairs. The unit provides a fair amount of light that will allow you to maneuver about in a 10 foot X 10 foot room with a fair amount of safely. The light will only last for a few hours before needing a recharge but that time frame should be enough to get most of your important tasks done. The solar panel is weather resistant but not water-proof. You could probably add a bead of silicone caulk around the front edge of the panel to make it more weather-resistant if you need to mount it in a more exposed area. The power cord is about eight foot long which is sufficient to mount the light and solar panel but would be better if it was just a little longer. ? The important thing about preps is that they should be portable, serve a variety of uses and not cost a fortune to operate and require only minimal amounts of maintenance. Staying above the water line!

Former Jackson defender now says singer abused him

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A choreographer and television personality who was a key witness in Michael Jackson's successful defense against child molestation charges is seeking permission to file a claim against the singer's estate alleging the pop superstar sexually abused him as a child. during a seven-year period, court records and an attorney said.

Wade Robson was abused by Jackson during a seven-year period, the choreographer's attorney, Henry Gradstein, wrote in a statement Wednesday. The attorney said Robson, 30, suffered a breakdown last year but has not stated how much his client is seeking to recoup from Jackson's estate if a judge permits him to pursue his abuse allegations.

Details on Robson's accusations were filed under seal.

The molestation allegations have been fiercely denied by an attorney for Jackson's estate and the singer's criminal defense attorney, Thomas Mesereau Jr.

"Mr. Robson was one of my strongest witnesses in Michael Jackson's criminal trial," Mesereau said. "I called him to the stand at the beginning of the defense case and he was adamant that he had never been improperly touched or molested. This makes no sense."

Robson was the first defense witness during the 2005 trial that ended with Jackson's acquittal on molestation charges. He also spoke favorably about Jackson after the singer's death in June 2009.

"Last year, on a career trajectory that was off the charts, (Robson) collapsed under the stress and sexual trauma of what had happened to him for seven years as a child," Gradstein wrote in a statement that referred to Jackson as a sexual predator.

"There are significant legal issues involved in this case that have the potential to impact lives beyond just our client," he wrote.

Gradstein said he could not discuss specifics of the case, but he cited Robson's recent breakdown as the choreographer's reason for reversing his previous statements about Jackson. "As a result, he started intensive treatment which ultimately led to his ability to come forward," Gradstein said.

Robson, an Australian-born choreographer, has appeared on the Fox series "So You Think You Can Dance" and worked with Britney Spears and other stars.

"Mr. Robson's claim is outrageous and pathetic," Jackson estate attorney Howard Weitzman wrote in a statement. "This is a young man who has testified at least twice under oath over the past 20 years and said in numerous interviews that Michael Jackson never did anything inappropriate to him or with him. Now, nearly four years after Michael has passed this sad and less than credible claim has been made. We are confident that the court will see this for what it is."

Gradstein filed a motion seeking permission to file a late creditor's claim against Jackson's estate on May 1, nearly four years after the singer's death, court records show. Most of the documents are sealed pending a June court hearing, but a summary of the documents states the choreographer includes a declaration from a psychiatrist and an "Unfiled Complaint for Childhood Sexual Abuse."

The period for filing claims against Jackson's estate has long since passed, but a California civil statute allows victims of abuse to file a lawsuit within three years of discovering "that psychological injury or illness ... was caused by the sexual abuse."

The judge overseeing Jackson's massive probate case will have to determine whether Robson's claim can go forward.

Gradstein's statement did not address any specifics about when or where Jackson's alleged molestation occurred, but the choreographer testified extensively in 2005 about the time he spent with Jackson.

"Wade Robson, in addition to being one of the most talented people on the planet, is one of the kindest, most gentle, decent and introspective human beings one will ever meet. He is the loving father of a young son and happily married," Gradstein wrote in a statement first obtained by celebrity website TMZ.

His claim was filed nearly eight years to the day after Robson testified Jackson never inappropriately touched him. He was 22 at the time he testified, telling jurors in Jackson's criminal case that he met Jackson when he was 5 years old and had spent the night at Jackson's Neverland Ranch more than 20 times, sleeping in the singer's bedroom on most visits.

During the trial, Robson bristled at testimony by other witnesses that they had seen Jackson molest him. "I'm very mad about it," he told jurors. "It's not true and they put my name through the dirt. I'm really not happy about it."

The claims come as Jackson's mother, who supported her son throughout the molestation trial in Santa Maria, Calif., is in a Los Angeles courtroom pursuing a negligent hiring case against the promoter of Jackson's planned series of comeback concerts.

Katherine Jackson has not addressed Robson's allegations, and her attorney, Perry Sander Jr., said Mesereau was the appropriate person to comment on the molestation claims.

Marvin S. Putnam, an attorney for concert promoter AEG Live LLC, said he wasn't familiar with the specifics of Robson's claims but doubted it would come up in the civil trial filed by Jackson's mother. "I don't see how it has anything to do with our case," he said.
