FOUR players of the Philippine Azkals national football team played impressively and caught the attention of CF Internacional de Madrid coach Javier Garcia Marquez.
Marquez said Emilio ?Chieffy? Caligdong, the Younghusband brothers Phil and James, and Fil-Spanish booter Angel Guirado were awesome during their charity game at the Rizal Memorial football stadium last Saturday.
?Chieffy really impressed, and so did players like Phil, James and Angel,? said Marquez after the visiting Spanish side gave the Azkals a 3-1 beating in their showdown dubbed ?Dili Kamo Nag-iisa.?
The Spanish mentor added that it was tough playing in the first half, even though they scored two goals. They then felt the heat of the Filipino booters? defense in the second half, where the counterattacks of the four Azkals players, according to Marquez, kept the Madrid side on their toes all the time.
Rufino ?Rufo? Sanchez came through with the first goal for CFIM off his penalty kick in the 15th minute after Filipino goalkeeper Eduard Sacapano fouled Daniel Garcia Fernandez in the 15th minute.
CFIM then moved ahead at 2-0 in the 32nd minute, when Garcia Fernandez scored on a counter attack against the Azkals Alyansa.
Immediately after the halftime break, the Spanish team stunned the Filipinos with a quick counter attack in the 45th minute, with Ignacio Buenache Feijoo scoring a third goal for a 3-0 advantage.
As the Azkals tightened up on defense, the elder James Younghusband prevented what could have been a shut-out loss by scoring Azkals Alyansa?s lone goal. His header in the 61st minute proved to be the Azkals Alyansa?s saving grace.
Marquez hoped the fans enjoyed watching the game, organized for the benefit of the victims of tropical storm Sendong, which ravaged two provinces in northern Mindanao last month.
Around 8,000 spectators showed up to watch the game, which raised P25,900, $100, and 10,000 euros. CFIM president Stephen Newman turned over 10,000 (more than P550,000) to the Philippine National Red Cross and the ABS-CBN Foundation for the benefit of the calamity victims in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City during the halftime break.
Jerseys signed by Real Madrid?s Ronaldo and the entire team and Iker Casillas were also turned over to the organizers.
The Azkals will now get ready for South Korea?s Icheon team in another benefit game for the benefit of Sendong victims on Jan. 21.
