On June 13, 2011 two sisters were relinquished to the Hermitage Cat shelter. Zoe and Chloe were your typical siblings; one outgoing and one painfully shy. Chloe was adjusting to shelter life well and spent a lot of time in the main room of the house greeting guests. Zoe spent her time on a porch avoiding attention. Unfortunately Zoe was also avoiding food. Zoe stopped eating all together and developed Hepatic Lipidosis as a result. In spite of our best efforts Zoe would not eat and she was wasting away as a result. We took her to our Veterinarian at the Humane Society where they determined it was in her best interest to place a feeding tube. In the meantime Chloe was adopted. It wasn????t but a few days before Chloe was returned to the shelter for not eating. When she returned she was already showing subtle signs of Hepatic Lipidosis. We began force feeding her at the shelter. After a few days of this it was obvious that she was not ready to eat on her own. We took her to the veterinarian about a week after we initially took Zoe in. We decided it was in Chloe????s best interest to place a feeding tube for her as well though she was not as bad off as Zoe, yet. Though Zoe had been hospitalized for a week she was still not getting any better. She was being fed through her tube, but continued vomiting. When her sister Chloe was admitted to the Hospital they were placed in a kennel together. This seemed to be the magic touch that Zoe needed to get better. Within four days both cats were starting to eat on their own and were released from the Hospital to go into foster care. Once in foster care the girls thrived. They were spoiled and were served Fancy Feast 3 or 4 times a day. Zoe would still get spooked by strange noises, even someone talking outside the door or window. One night she got spooked and jumped off the bed and landed wrong on her back leg. She limped for a week the poor thing. Now Zoe & Chloe are doing well and have put on weight and Zoe????s fur is starting to grow back. Zoe & Chloe are very sweet, very special girls. They must be adopted together but will make their new family very happy.

Coe stressed the woman had been screened to get into Olympic Stadium so there had been no security breach.

An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus that erupted in western Uganda at the start of July has killed 14 people, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Saturday.
The latest outbreak was in the western Kibaale district, around 200 kilometres (125 miles) west of the Ugandan capital Kampala, and around 50 kilometres from the border with Democratic Republic of Congo,
"We have confirmed 20 people who have contracted the virus of which 14 have died," Joaquim Sewaka, WHO Uganda representative, told AFP.
Sewaka said that teams from the Ugandan health ministry and the US government's Centre for Disease Control (CDC) had been dispatched to the area.
"The response is strong and we will try to set up quarantine points as soon as possible," Sewaka said.
The rare haemorrhagic disease, named after a small river in DR Congo, killed 37 people in western Uganda in 2007 and claimed the lives of at least 170 people in the north of the country in 2000.

Carl Rivera ?13 ? Wouldn?t it be cool to have a job where every morning you wake up knowing you are going to make a new friend from a different state, country or even continent? Well that?s my job?for the summer at least. Thanks to the Small Business Internship Fund, this summer I am interning for Jason Bridges ?98 at Nantucket Bike Tours in Nantucket, Massachusetts. When I told my friends in the great state of Indiana this exciting news, I received two responses: 1.? ?You?re spending the summer on Nantucket Island? That?s awesome! How did you get that?? or 2. ?Where?s that?? For those of you who know of Nantucket, need I say more? For those of you who don?t know of this beautiful Island, do some research or take a tour!
Working with Jason has being nothing short of spectacular.? Jason?s enthusiasm and passion for his business has increased my desire to start my own business. Every day we look at QuickBooks to see how we can increase revenue and decrease costs. We are constantly looking for new marketing techniques to increase our visibility from improving the website or our t-shirts to posting a photo on Facebook or creating new rack cards. As a small business, we are constantly brainstorming ways in which NBT can expand. During this internship, Riley Floyd ?13 and I have had the opportunity to work with Jason and Courtney in creating a new segment of NBT, Nantucket Running Tours.
One thing I have learned from Jason is whether it?s posting a comment on Facebook or walking downtown to grab an iced coffee, we are constantly branding ourselves. Jason and I have daily discussions about our past experiences with what Carnegie presents and also how we can practice these tools in our tours. Every tour is different. That means, as a guide, we must be aware of facial expressions, body language, and different clues on how the person is feeling and what interests them. Some clients are huge history buffs and want all the information I can give them while some love taking pictures and just want to enjoy some company. Our goal as a guide is to give each client the best experience he/she can have on Nantucket and that experience is different for everyone.
This internship has given me a great opportunity to learn how to properly run a small business, network, and adapt to different people. Every day, I increase my knowledge of business, meet new enthusiastic people, and ride my bike?all on Nantucket Island. Not bad for a summer internship, huh?

LONDON (AP) ? It's not a concert, Danny Boyle stressed. It's about the athletes.
In a very real way, though, the director of the Olympic opening ceremony was wrong.
While sports are the heart of the Olympics, music ? loud, bold, world-conquering British music, amplified in the most global of settings ? was the booming beat Friday night.
One of Boyle's stated aims was to showcase "the best of us" ? and ever since the Beatles and the Rolling Stones appropriated American blues, country and rock and remade them into something new, the best of British has been music.
Music ran like a river through Boyle's "Isles of Wonder" extravaganza, which depicted a Britain brutally wrenched from its rural past by industrialization and upheaval before being thrust into a fast, uncertain, exciting new world ? all propelled by the throb of homegrown music.
It began gently, with Edward Elgar, the hymn "Jerusalem" and "Danny Boy" ? but soon started to rock.
Olympic ceremonies often play it safe. But Boyle, who brought in the electronic duo Underworld as musical directors, gave his show a cheeky edge. The Sex Pistols, once the outrageous face of punk, were included with their song "Pretty Vacant." Boyle even slipped in a few bars of the Pistols' snarling "God Save the Queen" ("the fascist regime") early on ? although he respectfully did it before Queen Elizabeth II herself had entered the stadium.
Fashion designer Wayne Hemingway said including the Pistols was typical of Boyle's "wit and guts."
"Normally it would be brushed over, but the punk spirit which is in Britain was written through the ceremony," he said. "Anyone cynical about this has no lust for life. It's just bloody brilliant."
In parts, it was like a Union Jack jukebox ? a medley of tracks from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, David Bowie and Queen, the Specials and the Jam, the Stone Roses and Eurythmics, and what seemed like dozens more.
The list spanned generations, from The Who's "My Generation" right up to live performances from two of the hottest homegrown acts of the moment: grime star Dizzee Rascal ? who performed his hit "Bonkers" ? singer Emeli Sande and the band Arctic Monkeys.
The musical melange continued during the athletes parade, with members of the 204 national teams circling the track to everything from "West End Girls" by the Pet Shop Boys and "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele.
The British squad entered to a roar of applause ? and Bowie's anthem-like "Heroes," while Pink Floyd played during the fireworks display.
It was only fitting that a former Beatle, Paul McCartney, closed the show, leading a mass singalong of "Hey Jude."
The amazing thing about the outpouring was how endless it seemed ? a reminder that British music, decade after decade, has retained its genius.
Could any other country have pulled off a similar homegrown aural feast? The United States, certainly. But Boyle reminded Britain how much it has to be proud of ? and the clapping, cheering, singing 60,000-strong crowd loved him for it.
Broadcast to a television audience estimated at 1 billion, it played like an excellent ad for Cool Britannia 2.0.
Singer-songwriter Billy Bragg spoke for many when he tweeted: "Impressive though (the opening ceremony) in Beijing was, they didn't have any great pop music to play, did they?"
And if you haven't heard enough, have no fear ? Universal Music said an album of the ceremony soundtrack would be on sale "within moments" of the ceremony ending.

I have rested, obviously. And as I have, it was almost like I was able to communicate with, and be with my darling Aileen. The weather is of course a bit easier for the Cleveland area. And that means that it?s a lot easier for me to breathe. With that, my hearing seems to be easing as well. After showering, I am increasingly convinced that the hearing issues I am having are due to primarily various forms of dirt that have become lodged in the ear canal. As I said, due to the ear, nose and throat department at Metro being? right next door to internal medicine, where my darling Aileen was seen almost every week while she was dying. I just have a really hard time going to that section of the hospital. Partially, of course, on the account that going there pushes way too many painful memories at me at one time. The other aspect of course has to do with my transgenderism.
As I have explained, during the time when Aileen was dying, we both decided that I should ?hide? my transgenderism from the medical people. And that we did this on the basis that we both felt that had I shown outwardly that I was a transgendered female that she might not have received the level of care that she got. And as I have also explained, my darling Aileen was incensed about this before she died. So much so, that three days before she died she asked me to promise her that I would return to living as a transgendered female. So, as with all the promises I made to my darling Aileen, I promised her that I would do what she wanted. Hence, I have returned to living as a transgendered female.
Of course I was not prepared for the level of hatred for transgendered females that has mushroomed over the past few years. And so, naturally, coupled with the extreme pain of losing my darling Aileen to liver cancer, I am at the same time, trying to deal with this level of hatred in the United States, and around the world, for any man who dares to want the same right that a woman has, which is to change their gender on the basis of how they relate their soul to the Almighty.
And naturally, this conflict does in fact cause a burden on my soul and my heart and mind. And also naturally, the fact that there are people in my neighborhood who have so much hatred and misunderstanding of my being a transgendered female, also weight upon my heart, mind and soul. But it must be stated that not now, or ever, have I considered that anything I have ever dealt with in the entirety of my life can compare in any way, to level of suffering that millions of amazing and wonderful children and fantastic men and women are dealing with on a daily basis, whereby many will lose their lives by sundown today.
So, I do not anyone, either in my own neighborhood or anywhere else in the world, to ever suppose, under any circumstances that I am now, or ever, making out my life to have any degree of difficulty that they, or anyone else may be dealing with. I know full well how insignificant my life is and has been. And I understand that the level of hatred for who and what I am, in my own neighborhood is so great that my passing, whenever that shall take place, will be a moment of celebration on the part of many, if not most, of the people in the neighborhood where I live. No problem. I have no delusions about this at all.
At the same time, one of the reasons that my darling Aileen was able to survive as long as she did was, of course, not only due to her tremendous courage and her strength of will. But also because she trusted me. She believed in me. She believed that when I said that she would not go home to God before she was ready to do so that, because I had said so, this was a fact. Just like she also knew that, no matter what, I will survive. She knew, as she was dying, that regardless of what hurdles and/or issues that might present themselves, that no matter what, I would survive. And so I shall.
As I have just explained, it is becoming increasingly clear to me that the hearing issues I am having are due more to dirt in my ear canal than they are due to any real hearing problems. And that, over time, my hearing will return. The weather has, of course been working not only against me, but against millions of people throughout the world as well. And with the changes in the weather, here in Cleveland, now moving into the pre-fall section of the seasonal year, I expect that I will have an easier time resolving most, if not all, of my hearing issues.
Of course, I am going to have dark thoughts. That is part of the grieving process. I have known this, having been a caregiver to 8 different friends of mine, all who died of various forms of cancer before my darling Aileen came down with liver cancer. What I was ?not? prepared for was, and is, the severity of the pain from losing her. But with everything else in my life that I have survived. I shall survive this as well. My darling Aileen counted on this, and still counts on this now. That, no matter what, I will continue. I will survive.
Personal freedom is a relative thing. In some nations in the world, personal freedom is so limited that the concept of freedom can never be equal to the level of freedom that we, the American people enjoy, and so often take for granted. And while I have never? travelled outside of the United States, other than to Mexico and Canada, I have learned a great deal about the diminished levels of freedom that so many in the world live with and have to contend with, on a daily basis. So, simply because of the level of hatred that there is for me here, in my own neighborhood, shall not diminish my concept of personal freedom. For as I have written, I have a wonderful backyard. And it is my plan to spend a lot more time there, than in the front of my house, where I have to contend, on a semi-daily basis, with the open hatred there is for me, as a result of my life choices and because of who and what I am to myself and to God.
And as I have also said, the only way that any of the people in my neighborhood can demonstrate their hatred for me, is if they see me. And if I? remain unseen, then they will have to demonstrate their hatred for me to each other. therefore, their hatred will pass back and forth between them, and I will not feel any of their hatred, since I will not be present to see it, or witness it. And that?s just how it should be. Send me to God. For when I leave this world, I shall go home. Home to God. And home to my darling Aileen. Into her arms, where I have been all through time and space. For I know, and she also knew, that this life was not the first time we had fallen in love. That we have been joined all through time, in one form or another. As two who would become one, and then would become three.
I am truly sorry that my life has caused so much hatred in others. I am sorry that my being a Maschke has caused so many people to hate me through the years. I am sorry that my being Jewish has caused people to hate me. I am sorry that my choice to reconcile my soul before God, as a transgendered female, has caused so many to hate me. I am sorry that my mental illnesses, and the degree of whatever intelligence that God gave me has caused so many to hate me. But in all sincerity, I have come to understand, now more than ever before in my entire life, the? true toxicity of hatred itself. And I am, as I have always tried to be and to aspire to, dedicated now as I have been, but more so now than ever before, to removing all forms of? that toxic concept within me and within the confines of my life.
I can see now, so clearly, how easy it is for us humans to engage in various forms of hatred. There?s always an excuse to hate something or someone. And always the result of that hatred is varying levels of toxicity within the person?s life. My darling Aileen wanted, more than anything, to ?fix? something in me. When she died, I said that she had succeeded. That she had gotten rid of my anger. And I honestly thought that was true. But the past several months has shown me that while I believed then, and believe now, that she actually was able to ?fix? my anger. I found that this was not completely true. It has only been by seeing the hatred of others toward me, that I have come to understand something about my darling Aileen that I never understood before. Why she wanted to ?fix? something in me.
She wanted to ?fix? something in me, because she knew if she could do that, then, as a result, she would be giving me part of herself to carry on with me, for the duration of my life. A kind of compass. And, as I have said, it has only been by witnessing the hatred that others have for me, that I have seen more clearly my own hatred of myself and some of the forms of behavior that I have said I dislike so much that I can almost feel a kind of hatred toward those forms of? behavior. And by seeing this more clearly, I am coming to understand that to embrace any form of hatred, what-so-ever, is to allow the toxicity of hatred into one?s life. And thereby then suffer from that toxicity.
So, my spiritual path that I began almost two years ago, it now moving in a slightly different direction. But ever onward. Onward toward my darling Aileen. Onward toward home. Home to God. And home back into the arms of my other heartbeat. My darling Leen.
Let those in the world who hate me continue their hatred of me. For I shall not let that hatred into my home. Into this house that my darling Aileen died protecting. And I shall not let that hatred into my life. No matter what.
I am certain that I shall have many more dark moments in my life as a result of my tremendous love for my darling Leen. And how sad I am to have lost her. Just as I am certain that I shall have many more dark moments in my life as a result of the various forms of mental illness that have followed me all of my life. BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian regime threatened Monday to use its chemical and biological weapons in case of a foreign attack, in its first ever acknowledgement that it possesses weapons of mass destruction.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi stressed, however, that Damascus would not use its unconventional arms against its own citizens. The announcement comes as Syria faces international isolation, a tenacious rebellion that has left at least 19,000 people dead and threats by Israel to invade to prevent such weapons from falling into rebel hands.
Syria's decision to reveal the long suspected existence of its chemical weapons suggests a desperate regime deeply shaken by an increasingly bold revolt that has scored a string of successes in the past week, including a stunning bomb attack that killed four high-level security officials, the capture of several border crossings and sustained offensives on the regime strongholds of Damascus and Aleppo.
"No chemical or biological weapons will ever be used, and I repeat, will never be used, during the crisis in Syria no matter what the developments inside Syria," Makdissi said in news conference broadcast on Syrian state TV. "All of these types of weapons are in storage and under security and the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression."
While the statement Makdissi read out promised not to use the weapons against the Syrian people, he later noted that Damascus is not facing an internal enemy in the rebellion, which the regime has described as being funded from abroad and driven by foreign extremists.
He added that there was a foreign political and media campaign "that seeks to justify and prepare international public opinion for military intervention under the false pretense of weapons of mass destruction."
Syria is believed to have nerve agents as well as mustard gas, Scud missiles capable of delivering these lethal chemicals and a variety of advanced conventional arms, including anti-tank rockets and late-model portable anti-aircraft missiles.
Israel has said it fears that chaos following Assad's fall could allow the Jewish state's enemies to access Syria's chemical weapons, and has not ruled out military intervention to prevent this from happening.
A senior U.S. intelligence official said Friday the Syrians have moved chemical weapons material from the country's north, where the fighting was fiercest, apparently to both secure it, and to consolidate it, which U.S. officials considered a responsible step.
But there has also been a disturbing rise in activity at the installations, so the U.S. intelligence community is intensifying its monitoring efforts to track the weapons and try to figure out whether the Syrians are trying to use them, the official said on condition of anonymity to discuss the still-evolving investigation.
Makdissi did not discuss last week's bombing claimed by the rebels that killed four top Syrian security officials, but assured journalists that the situation was under control, despite reports of clashes throughout the country and especially in the major cities of Aleppo and the capital Damascus.
"Yes, there were clashes on certain streets in certain neighborhoods, but the security situation is now much better. Everyone is feeling reassured," he said. "We are not happy about this, but this is an emergency situation and it will not last more than a day or two and the situation will return to normal."
Security forces appeared to show more government control in videos posted online by activists Monday. Some of the clips show Syrian militia sweeping through Damascus neighborhoods once held by rebels, kicking down doors and searching houses in mop up operations against the fighters that had managed to hold parts of the capital for much of last week.
It was a different story in Aleppo, however, where the Britain-based Syria Observatory reported fierce fighting in a string of neighborhoods, including Sakhour and Hanano, in the northeast of Syria's largest city.
Several videos posted by activists showed rebels battling regime tanks in the narrow streets of Sakhour. In one case, a tank on fire rumbles past after being hit by rebels as a man escapes from the flaming turret. Other videos showed cheering rebels celebrating around destroyed tanks, even driving around one they had captured.
The Observatory said many people fled these neighborhoods in the subsequent lulls in the fighting. The Associated Press could not independently verify the videos posted by the activists.
Aleppo, Syria's biggest city with about 3 million residents, has been the focus of rebel assaults by a newly formed alliance of opposition forces called the Brigade of Unification. The group said Sunday it was launching an operation to take the city.
Even as the government appeared to be reasserting control in the capital after the weeklong rebel assault, the Arab League offered Syrian President Bashar Assad and his family a "safe exit" if he steps down.
"This request comes from all the ... Arab states: Step aside," said Qatari Prime Minister Hamid bin Jassim Al Thani at an Arab League foreign ministers meeting in Doha, Qatar, that concluded at dawn Monday. He urged Syria to form a temporary transitional government to plan for a possible post-Assad era. Makdissi dismissed the offer as "flagrant interventionism."
The Arab League has already suspended Syria's membership and it is doubtful that Assad will pay much attention to their calls. He ignored a similar request to step down in exchange for asylum by Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki last February.
