Newcomer Jasmine Villegas Tackles Domestic Violence In Her Video For ?Didn?t Mean It?

"I was able to get out..."

You may remember seeing Jasmine Villegas as the love interest in Justin Bieber?s video for Baby. But now she?s stepping out on her own with a powerful new single that shares a very personal experience the young singer had in a past relationship. Jasmine has revealed that she was once a victim of domestic abuse and her video for Didn?t Mean It tells a story that is all-too familiar and far too common. Many have praised Jasmine for courageously addressing this issue, but others have said that her video is not as empowering as it seems. Check it out inside and let us know what you think:

Jasmine Vallegas: Didn?t Mean It

?

Arguably, Jasmine does leave the boyfriend in the video, but you could also say that since we never see her walk out of the door the conclusion is a bit more open-ended. A reader on MTV noted that, since it?s not clear whether or not she left the video does not completely encourage victims of domestic violence to leave their relationships. Ultimately, I?m not sure that it?s hugely important whether or not she left.

Aside from the socially conscious storyline, I think the song has the ability to stand on its own. Jasmine has a young voice but it?s not too sugary, even on this very pop-sounding track.

Here?s what Jasmine said about her topic of choice to MTV:

?This topic is very important to me because it?s something I experienced firsthand for over a year in a bad relationship. Fortunately for me, I was able to get out relatively early, and now I want to let other women know that you don?t have to feel ashamed or embarrassed about getting help?I believe every woman is beautiful and sometimes we get caught up in situations or relationships that make us lose sight of how beautiful and precious we really are.?

What do you guys think of the video/song? Empowering? Or just another pop break-up track, with a slightly darker spin to it?

And it?s not that I?m in the mood for domestic violence vids or anything; I just can?t help thinking of this classic:
