Health insurance premiums climb faster in 2011 (Reuters)

The cost of health insurance continues to climb for companies and workers, with annual family premiums this year growing at a pace triple that of 2010 and outpacing wage increases, according to a survey.

As the United States continues to grapple with a stubbornly weak economy, family premiums in employer-sponsored health plans jumped 9 percent this year and single premiums rose 8 percent, compared with 2010's 3 percent and 5 percent, the Kaiser Family Foundation's annual study, published Tuesday, found.

"We're probably on a more modest side ... but even with a 5 percent increase in a premium (that our workers saw) this year, they didn't get a 5 percent raise," said Jeff Franck, a compensation and benefits manager at Altru Health System, which employs about 3,700 people in North Dakota and Minnesota and participated in the survey.

Health insurance, unlike other industrialized countries, is largely provided by employers. Although the latest Census found more Americans losing company-sponsored insurance, almost 170 million Americans were on employer-based plans in 2010.

Kaiser and the Health Research & Educational Trust surveyed 2,088 randomly selected public and private employers large and small earlier this year.

The survey found that, on average, employees are contributing 28 percent, or about $4,129, a year toward employer-sponsored family plans. That is 131 percent more than a decade ago.

Including employers' contributions, the overall premium has increased 113 percent since 2001 to $15,073 a year.

More workers, especially in smaller firms, continue to join high-deductible health plans. Thirty-one percent of covered employees this year have to pay at least $1,000 in single plans before coverage kicks in, up from 27 percent last year.

The survey also highlighted some early results of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform.

Under one of the few provisions already in effect, people under the age of 26 are now allowed to remain covered by their parents' insurance plans to curb historically high uninsured rates in that age group. The Kaiser survey estimated that U.S. companies have added 2.3 million young adults to their parents' family health policies.

Franck at Altru Health pegged much of the premium costs' increase at his company to adding children of his employees onto their plans.

That part of the healthcare reform was not meant to cut costs, and many cost-cutting provisions have yet to kick in, said Kaiser President and Chief Executive Drew Altman.

"There are a variety of factors that could have been responsible for (premium increases), but the major reason is not the healthcare reform," he said.

Although the survey did not study contributing factors, Altman echoed other analysts in suggesting that insurance companies had planned their premiums in expectation of more people going to the doctor or buying medications as the economy improved -- which did not happen.

Insurers have generally attributed the need to raise premiums to growing underlying medical care costs as coverage also continues to expand. Both have fed into a heated debate over the future of healthcare spending, which for several decades has grown faster per person than the nation's economic output, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

Slowing down those soaring costs is one of the main issues on the agenda of a bipartisan congressional deficit-reduction panel that is due to make recommendations by November 23 on how to slash the U.S. budget deficit by at least $1.2 trillion.

Yemen FM blames opposition for ongoing violence (AP)

UNITED NATIONS ? Yemen's foreign minister on Tuesday said the opposition's refusal to accept the results of the 2006 presidential election was to blame for the unrest in the country and warned that, unchecked, the tension could escalate into a civil war.

Abu Bakr al-Qidri also told the United Nations General Assembly that President Ali Abdullah Saleh remains committed to a U.S.-backed Gulf Cooperation Council initiative as a means to resolving a crisis that has left hundreds dead over the past seven months in the Arab world's poorest nation.

The foreign minister's remarks spoke a day after the U.N. Security Council urged all sides in Yemen to reject violence and take urgent steps toward a political transition, offering its support for the GCC plan that calls on Saleh to resign and hand over power to his vice president in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Saleh ? who returned recently from Saudi Arabia where he was recovering from injuries sustained months earlier during a rocket attack on a mosque in which he was praying ? has said before that he intends to sign the deal, only to back away from the move at the last minute.

Al-Qidri said that the opposition groups, realizing that they were not going to get into office through the ballot box after the 2006 presidential elections, "turned to maneuvers, including violence, that threaten (to lead to) the outbreak of civil war and devastating conflicts in Yemen."

"The opposition powers used the tidal wave of change being witnessed by Arab countries to prevent Yemen from achieving democratic change through elections," he said. "However, we respected the demands of the youth and we started a dialogue with them in order to respond to their request" for reform.

Human Rights Watch said the speech "flies in the face of reality."

"If they are serious about upholding human rights, the Yemeni authorities should stop security forces from shooting peaceful protesters, allow an international inquiry into the bloodshed, and let the United Nations establish a human rights monitoring office in Yemen," the organization said in a statement.

Al-Qidri said that Yemen "adheres to the initiative by the GCC as a foundation for (resolving) the political crisis," adding that Saleh has asked the vice president to work with the Gulf states to "achieve a mechanism in order to guarantee a smooth and democratic transition of power."

The remarks echoed those of Saleh who, in his first public speech since his return, said on Sunday that those who are "chasing power" should go to the polls instead of the streets.

Saleh, who has ruled Yemen for 33 years, has come under tremendous and mounting pressure from street protests and neighboring Arab nations to transfer power. In his televised address, he said he was committed to the deal drafted by the GCC, which includes Gulf powerhouse Saudi Arabia, but his opponents dismissed his offer as a stalling tactic to allow him to consolidate his hold on power.

The mass protests that rolled into Yemen after taking root and ousting the leaders of Tunisia and Egypt have been particularly devastating for the impoverished nation. Al-Qidri said the country had lost over $2 billion in the months since the protests began ? a hefty sum for a nation with few resources aside from limited quantities of oil on which it relies on for revenue.

In addition, the Arabian Peninsula country, which was united in 1990 after a grueling war between the south and the north, is grappling with the influence of al-Qaida. The terror group has capitalized on the deteriorating security and the ongoing conflict to make bold grabs for power in several regions, including capturing entire towns. Its presence and ability to operate relatively freely in Yemen is a source of major concern for the United States as several nearly successful terror plots against the U.S. have originated in Yemen.

Saleh was seen as a key, if somewhat unreliable, ally by Washington in its fight against terrorism and al-Qidri referenced the concerns about terrorism in calling on the international community to help Yemen through a "comprehensive global strategy" that would build the country's "national capacities so as to fight extremism and terrorist ideology."

He said such a plan did not hinge on military action, but on helping the country with political, social and economic efforts that could address some of the key factors that contribute to the rise of extremism. That would include, presumably, dealing with youth unemployment that, in Yemen, stands at over 35 percent.

Kenya Nobel laureate Maathai dies in hospital: group (Reuters)

NAIROBI (Reuters) ? Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner and environmentalist Wangari Maathai has died in hospital where she was undergoing treatment for cancer, her organization the Green Belt Movement said on Monday.

Maathai, who won the 2004 Nobel Prize, was the founder of Green Belt Movement, a civil and women rights activist and also served as a Member of Parliament.

"It is with great sadness that the Green Belt Movement announces the passing of its founder and chair, Prof. Wangari Muta Maathai, after a long illness bravely borne," the organization said in a statement on its website.

"Prof. Maathai passed away on the 26th of September 2011 in Nairobi. Her family and loved ones were with her at the time," the statement, signed by the movement's Executive Director Karanja Njoroge, added.

Wangari Maathai, who was also a veterinary anatomy professor, rose to international fame for campaigns against government-backed forest clearances in Kenya in the late 1980s and 1990s.

She branded the clearances a political ploy that caused irreversible environmental damage. The courts blocked her suits and Green Belt lawyers complained that their cases were dismissed on technical grounds or their files were mysteriously lost.

"Her departure is untimely and a very great loss to all of us who knew her -- as a mother, relative, co-worker, colleague, role model, and heroine -- or those who admired her determination to make the world a peaceful, healthy, and better place for all of us," Green Belt said in its statement.

Quade has a fairly handsome face if you can get past the fact that he's a ghost. His eyes are expressive, his jaw is strong and his lips are full and always seem to be curled up into a smile. It's more than just him liking to smile, too, it's simply the shape of his lips. He likes to wear simple garments, a plain pair of pants and a tunic of some sort will suit him, though his favorite color is red, so he wears it a lot.

Personality: When you think, "ghost" the first thing that may come to mind is some sort of sneaky bastard, right? Well, that's not quite right, see, Quade loves to be seen, loves to be heard, loves to be noticed. He's often upset because he feels like people just look straight through him (which, well, they do. I mean, he's a ghost...) He's loud, boisterous and just so happens to love himself a good party. Ah, yes, and he loves the ladies. Heh, flirting is a fun way to pass the time, yeah? Really, give him any girl (except a dryad, like, he's not racist or anything but they kind of freak him him.) and he guaranties he can get them to notice him before long, and honestly, whether they'll admit it or not, most women are flattered when a ghost flirts with them, because, honestly, he could be in the bedroom of much more beautiful woman than them and they wouldn't even know it. That said, though, Quade really is a romantic at heart. He wants to find a queen to work with, serve and love for the rest of his life, he's actually willing to change for the right woman. He really is loving and he feels, so much more deeply than anyone would think a ghost could, which is weird to him, because every ghost he knows feels things as deeply as he does. Every word said to him has the ability to make or break his day, it doesn't matter if it's at simple as "hello" or as complex as, "by the gods why are ghosts so damned creepy" he takes it all to heart. Though, you know, he's just the type of person to turn around and grab a drink to wash away pain, he hasn't really learned to deal with it any other way.
What do you think about being able to choose your spouse: Quade loves the idea! Maybe, just maybe, he'll be able to end up with a gorgeous girl that actually doesn't think he's a creepy monster! Oh, and trust me, he's gonna try and get the most beautiful girl there, both inside and out.
History: As a child, Quade was extremely susceptible to illness, there were times when it was thought that the only heir to the throne would simply "fade out." His parents, fearing for his life, pretty much locked him away during the war, tried to get him well. They tried everything, from herbs, to magic, they even got one of their angelic friends to try and heal him, but nothing seemed to work. It didn't effect anyone as deeply as it did the queen, and she'd often spend long days by his bedside, trying to convince her son that he'd be okay, even if he was already fading. That taught him what truly make a beautiful woman, the kind that really cares and will never, ever give up on her loved ones just because it seems hopeless. Well, after years of nothing, one of the remedies the king and queen tried began to work, and their eight-year-old son started to get well! It was a joyous day and if the kingdom weren't in the middle of the war, they would've celebrated.

Sadly enough, though, the king was soon lost to that very war, and the very day before it's end, too. The queen and young prince mourned his loss for months never had Quade felt such pain, such hopelessness. His father was dead, killed by the hand of a vampire. He knew it just had to be, simply because very few nations actually had swords that could harm a ghost, the vampire kingdom was one of the few. Quade started to try and counteract his pain, but nothing seemed to work right, nothing made it feel better. He hated that. He couldn't bring the man back, so he'd simple have to learn to be the best king he could be in his absence. And while it's hard at times, it's all going to be worth it in the end.

All the magazines, which include monthly and overall health, nutrition, weight training, fitness, etc.which to personally subscribe to that is really better? Best list / detail was selected as the best answer came. Safe and fast.

Muscle and Fitness is pretty good. It goes into detail about the exercises and diets that work. If you know a lot about fitness, however, can be a bit monotonous. If that's the case, I recommend a bodybuilding magazine spread and flex, if that's what you go for.

With great detail, because I have only yourself, but here still, I use Maximuscle is the magazine that I think every two months, and I basically just once some of them and continue to send a free magazine with the latest products, but also contains some of the best information and training materials I've seen, it seems really pick up dirt, so as to use does not necessarily mean that their products do not more (taste is not so nice, urgh!) I do not blame them for their advice and suggestions that things really first class for free.

Crash victim says Reno air race should go on (AP)

RENO, Nev. ? Dave Desmon felt the racing fighter plane swoosh past him and slam into his group of friends, killing a husband and wife, cracking open a friend's skull and breaking his girlfriend's leg.

But Desmon, a longtime pilot and Boeing engineer, said the carnage he witnessed standing near the finish line at the annual National Championship Air Races in Reno Friday did not turn him off from his favorite event.

"I will get my ticket and I will be standing in that same spot next year," Desmon said.

The crash was the nation's deadliest air racing disaster, with 11 confirmed dead and 14 others still being treated at Reno hospitals late Tuesday. In all, more than 70 people were admitted for injuries after the exploding plane sprayed shrapnel into the crowd of spectators, cutting limbs and other body parts.

Among the dead were Desmon's friends, George Hewitt, 60, and Wendy Hewitt, 56, of Fort Mohave, Ariz.

Desmon, 51, said he was standing with the Hewitts at the front of the grandstands when pilot James Leeward suddenly veered off course as he took second place and entered the third lap of the race. A mere three second later, the plane was on the ground in pieces and the Hewitts were nowhere to be seen, Desmon said.

"The plane pretty much landed right on them," said Desmon, who estimates he was standing just three feet away from the couple at the time.

Desmon joined the wailing crowd of survivors who combed through the wreckage, searching for maimed friends and relatives or body parts. One friend had an open skull and a missing arm. Desmon assumed the man was dead and turned to search for survivors. A nurse who was with them ripped a piece of curtain from the spectator stand and used it to patch the wounded man up.

Desmon sustained minor injuries that could leave lasting scars.

"I basically look like I took a shotgun full of rock salt," he said.

His wounded friend remains in intensive care and can't afford a medical airlift home, Desmon's girlfriend is still having trouble walking on her injured leg and the Hewitt's four adult children had begun planning a memorial service. Still, Desmon said, they all agreed the races should continue.

"This was a wonderful event and we would really hate to see something happen to this event as a result of their tragic deaths," he said. "The family is 100 percent for the races carrying on."

A spokesman for the medical examiner's office said investigators have been trying to identify body parts since the gruesome accident. The names of all the known fatal victims had been confirmed by police or family by late Tuesday.

Among the newly-identified victims named Tuesday were a Kanas woman previously reported missing, a father who took his 12-year-old son to see the racing pilots, a man who loved airplanes and a volunteer firefighter.

Relatives of the Kansas woman, 71-year-old Cheryl Elvin of Lenexa, had said she was likely dead because the relatives who attended the show with her were all taken to area hospitals for critical leg injuries.

John Craik, 45, of Gardnerville, Nev., died after taking his son to watch the race. Virginia Craik told The Associated Press that her grandson was not seriously injured and is back in school.

"It's been tough," she said.

James McMichael, 47, of Graham, Wash., was at the show because he "loved planes," his mother, Darlene McMichael, said. "That's why most people go to those things."

She said her son was survived by his wife and an extensive extended family.

"Our family has a great faith," she said. "And we feel like things happen for a reason. It doesn't make it easier."

Craig Salerno, 50, was a dispatcher for Continental Airlines and a lieutenant for a volunteer fire department. Salerno was also an amateur pilot who volunteered with the annual Wings Over Houston Airshow, where he served as a liaison between the main act and the show.

"He was just one of those kind of people that many people know," said Tony Buzbee, a Houston lawyer serving as a spokesman for the Friendswood, Texas family. "He made the community work."

Salerno was given his VIP ticket by a friend, Buzbee said. He was survived by his wife and two young children.

The others killed who had previously been identified were Sharon Stewart, 47, of Reno; Greg Morcom, 47, of Stanwood, Wash.; Michael Wogan, 22, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and Regina Bynum, 53, of San Angelo, Texas.

Leeward was a veteran air racer from Ocala, Fla., who flew in Hollywood films. He loved speeding, on the ground or in the air, and had recently taken up racing cars.

During the annual Reno competition, planes flew wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet from the ground. Pilots reached speeds of up to 500 mph.

George Hewitt, a recently retired pilot, "just couldn't shut up about how excited he was about coming to the races and having these great seats on the start and finish line," Desmon said. "The first couple of laps of that race were a heck of race."

Embracing Israel, GOP candidates assail Obama (AP)

NEW YORK ? Rick Perry, Mitt Romney and their GOP presidential rivals slammed President Barack Obama's Middle East policies Tuesday while emphatically declaring their ownsupport for Israel as the United Nations considered a bid for Palestinian statehood.

Republican front-runner Perry, the Texas governor, denounced the president's Israel policy as "misguided and dangerous," speaking to supporters in New York as the Obama administration worked a few miles away to thwart a U.N. vote to grant formal recognition to the Palestinian Authority.

Perry also accused Obama of appeasement, as did Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who assailed the president from the Midwest.

Perry's chief rival for the nomination, former Massachusetts Gov. Romney, issued a statement accusing Obama of "throwing Israel under the bus."

The Republican campaigns have similar goals: establish contrasts with Obama on an issue where he's struggled; chip away at American Jews' support for Democrats and prove their conservative, pro-Israel bona fides with the evangelical voters who will play a significant role in the GOP presidential primaries.

During the 2008 election campaign, Obama worked hard to reassure nervous Jewish voters that he would defend Israel as president. But he's faced doubts and criticism since then.

Perry criticized Obama's stated goal that any negotiations should be based on Israel's borders prior to the 1967 Mideast war, with mutually agreed adjustments and land swaps to accommodate population shifts and some homebuilding since 1967. Perry called that stance "insulting and naive."

Obama angered Israel earlier this year by endorsing a Palestinian demand that negotiations over future borders begin with the lines Israel held before capturing the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem in 1967.

In regard to potential official recognition, the administration has been working intensively behind the scenes to restart direct negotiations between Israelis and Palestinians and to persuade Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to drop his push and avoid an explosive confrontation at the U.N. later in the week.

But Perry had strong criticism nonetheless, speaking to a group of ultraconservative Jewish and Israeli leaders at a New York hotel.

"Simply put, we would not be here today at the precipice of such a dangerous move if the Obama policy in the Middle East wasn't naive, arrogant, misguided and dangerous," Perry said, flanked by U.S. and Israeli flags. "The Obama administration has appeased the Arab Street at the expense of our own national security interests. They have sowed instability that threatens the prospect of peace."

Romney said, "What we are watching unfold at the United Nations is an unmitigated diplomatic disaster. It is the culmination of President Obama's repeated efforts over three years to undermine its negotiating position." He called for an end to U.S. foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority if the U.N. vote went the Palestinians' way.

The candidates' remarks represented their efforts to win over the conservative and evangelical voters who care deeply about GOP support for Israel. They back Israel as a U.S. ally in the fight against terror and as a rare democracy in the volatile Mideast. Some also support Israel for theological reasons.

Perry told reporters his support for Israel was in part driven by his religious faith.

"I also as a Christian have a clear directive to support Israel, so from my perspective it's pretty easy," Perry said when a reporter asked if Perry's faith was driving his views. "Both as an American and as a Christian, I am going to stand with Israel."

Republicans who describe themselves as evangelical prefer Perry over Romney ? 33 percent really like Perry while just 17 percent really like Romney, according to an August AP-GfK poll. Republicans who aren't evangelical like both men about the same.

A third Republican candidate, Minnesota Rep. Bachmann, also weighed in Tuesday ? but Bachmann, also an evangelical, left religion out of it and instead issued a statement calling on Obama to prevent Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from coming to the U.N.

"Ahmadinejad has shown himself to be an enemy not only of Israel, but also of the United States," the Minnesota congresswoman said. "This administration tried and failed to do outreach to Iran, reminding us once again that appeasement of deadly dictators is never a wise or effective strategy."

Perry also accused the Obama administration of appeasing bad actors in the Middle East in connection with the Palestinian statehood effort.

"We're equally indignant of the Obama administration and their Middle East policy of appeasement that has encouraged such an ominous act of bad faith." In a political context, "appeasement" is language used sometimes used to describe how European governments tried to accommodate Adolf Hitler without sparking war.

Obama's re-election campaign was prepared to deal with the political fallout and assembled a team of prominent Jews ready to defend the president's record on Israel.

"It appears to be a coordinated Republican effort to distort and misrepresent Obama's strong record and support for Israel, by these presidential candidates and others, for partisan advantage," said former Democratic Rep. Mel Levine of California, who spoke to The Associated Press after Obama's campaign asked him to.

In 2008, Obama won 78 percent of the Jewish vote against Republican John McCain. While few strategists expect Jewish voters to swing heavily toward the GOP next year, even a small erosion of support for Obama could make a difference in Florida, a major swing state, and in several House districts across the country.

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes strongly defended the president's record on Israel Tuesday. "This administration could not have been a stronger friend and supporter here," Rhodes told reporters at the U.N. "What we're here to do is strongly support Israel and help work toward a two-state solution" in the best interest of both Israel and the Palestinians, Rhodes said.

Tensions are likely to escalate as the week goes on. Abbas, the Palestinian leader, said he will continue to seek full U.N. membership even though he says he is under "tremendous pressure" to drop the effort. The U.S. has indicated it would veto the proposal in the U.N. Security Council.

U.S. officials are insisting there is still time to avoid a divisive showdown, and have been working with Western allies in hopes of a last-minute compromise. Obama is to address the U.N. Wednesday.
